Avila Beach is a quiet (well, except for holiday weekends and during the summer on warm days), upscale, relatively isolated hamlet surrounded by high hills on 3 sides with a cute oceanfront promenade. The Avila Lighthouse Suites is our favorite place. San Luis Obispo is not on the ocean, so we prefer Avila Beach, about 10 miles south. If the Post Ranch is too spendy, I also like Glen Oaks, which is a beautifully renovated property in redwood forest (no ocean views) for $300+. The Post Ranch is on a cliff 1200 feet over the Pacific. There's no such thing in Big Sur as 'on the beach' because the whole coast is a mountain range that plunges into the ocean. My husband and I honeymooned there and have returned several times. I can unreservedly recommend the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, if you're OK with spending $600/night+.
